Table Stakes and Betting All In

Joining a real live card room inside a famous casino is something which is anticipated by all poker players. The added excitement of a live game has given poker the reputation of being the most challenging game in the casino. But before a player joins a live card room game, he should be aware of how the game is conducted. He should know the specific rules regarding betting, because in a card room, unlike virtual online games, real money is used.

Two aspects of betting that the poker player should clearly understand are table stakes and all in. Here are the things that a player should know about them.

  • Table Stakes
  • Usually, a game of poker such as Texas Hold’em is played according to table stakes. This means that the total amount of money that the poker player intends to use during the game should be already on the table, even before the game begins. Of course, the poker player is not required to use all his chips or money, but he must no longer add to this amount by getting more money from his own pocket. Although the poker player may not use all his chips, he is not permitted to reduce his money by pocketing the chips during a hand.

What if the number of available chips is not enough? In such cases, the poker player can declare his money in terms of chips and bills. That is, he may have chips before him which has a total of $100 and a $100 bill. This makes his total tables stakes at $200. With the money, the poker player can buy more chips. But he can never reach into his own pocket and use additional money to purchase more chips.

  • All In
  • If during the hand, the poker player runs out of chips and money but he is not allowed to get more money from his own pocket, what can he do? What he can do is to go all in. Betting “all in” is allowed when the poker player is “tapped out” or has run out of money. Of course, when the poker player bets all in, he need not call any more bets in order to stay in the game.

If this poker player is playing against one opponent only, then this opponent cannot make bets, too. The dealer simply deals all the remaining cards and there will be a showdown. That is, the player with the highest hand will take the pot.

If the poker player who went all in is playing against more than one opponents, then the opponents must continue betting. But the bets they make no longer go into the main pot. The bets go to a side pot. The poker player who went all in will have no part of the side bet. That is, if this player wins, he can only take the main pot. And the side pot is given to the opponent who has the second highest ranked hand. But if one of the opponents win, he will take both the main pot and the side pot.
